Surface to Air began with a group of friends who wanted to pursue their passions each in their field, in the late 90’s. The team has grown into a multidisciplinary company born in Paris in 2000. The company covers all creative domains such as fashion, photography, music and film. Surface to Air’s collections always have a contemporary interpretation of classic pieces that never fails to create an edge to things otherwise plain.

Mixed Tapes: Friendly Fires

In Mixed Tapes on March 27, 2009 at 7:35 PM

friendlyfires

Friendly Fires electro dance/punk songs are just as addictive and caffeine loaded as my daily Diet Coke (or should I say…hourly Diet Coke). I can’t help but to think they sound like that awesome song you closed your eyes and danced to but didn’t know the name that other night. Ed Mac, Jack Savidge and Edd Gibson’s music literally sounds and feels like a “Jump in the pool”.

Lower east side style meets downtown coolness and it all adds up to create Sophomore.  A line of timeless basics reflecting the simplicity of downtown New York. Sophomore was created by Chrissie Miller, who later joined forces with Madeleine von Froomer and expanded from only making t-shirts to a full line of trendy basics.
If you also need a break from American Apparel this clothing line has all the potential to become a wardrobe staple. New York locals and wannabes be alert!

Mixed Tapes: Holy Hail

In Mixed Tapes on March 21, 2009 at 1:31 AM

Whether you call it cool town rock or you just know it’s actually cerebral music hidden under dancey beats, Holy Hail is catchy indeed. Don’t confuse them with other average dance bands. Their upbeat pop tracks are scattered with political undertones, and that’s not a bad thing at all, at least not for this band. Dive headfirst into “Cool town rock” and “Born of a star”.

BONA DRAG

Endless thrift shopping and  young designer shops hunting are some of those things that I just love to do. But sometimes isn’t it nice when someone does that for you? Whether you are passionate about finding your own little particular places to shop, “Bona Drag” just makes it more efficient. All I know is the studded ballet slippers caught my attention and made me want to have a Carrie moment, that will do it for me.

Ban.do

On the top of my “must-have” list right now is Ban.do, the coolest most charming line of hair-accessories. Former L.A stylists Jen and Jamie created this line which reflects their chic but effortless style. Their pieces have been featured in inumerous magazines and are definitely buzz worthy. It’s eccentricity and uniqueness makes it definitely not the type of accessory that is only glanced at, more like stared.

Mixed Tapes: Stricken City

In Mixed Tapes on March 13, 2009 at 9:20 PM

Stricken city has a textured sound and amazing offbeat style. Formed in the Midlands and now based in London, the quartet is fronted by edgy Rebekah Raa. Their music is just as avant-garde as their artistic music videos. The original concepts of their videos only compliments their already feisty music. Stricken City’s creativeness is refreshingly inspiring.

MY PET SQUARE

The uniform of 80’s kids, “My Pet Square” is the perfect morning-after line.  When your feeling a bit crook after too much partying and not enough hours to sleep, their clothes just make you look cool without trying. Quirky, sexy and hip, if the line was an actual person it had to be Agyness Deyn. Vicki Lee and May-Bennett’s Sydney based fashion label is undoubtedly my favorite line of the moment.

Mixed Tapes: Florence and The Machine

Florence and The Machine’s whimsical style is impossible not to notice. Florence’s voice is very much folk but her music is just as folk as a indie dance party. As Florence Welsh her self has said,“I want my music to sound like throwing yourself out of a tree, or off a tall building, or as if you’re being sucked down into the ocean and you can’t breathe.” Whether it is  her outrageous fashion foward style, her random videos, witty lyrics or actual music that captivates you, it is definitely worth checking out.

KIME BUZZELLI

A graduate from fashion Illustration at Parsons, Kime Buzzelli’s paintings and drawings are inspired by fashion, music and make believe. Buzelli’s work portrays youth in its essence. Her drawings portray moments in a composition of her signature girls with symbolic objects and words. Buzzelli’s signature girls unstated old glamour and coolness exhales fashion, and makes me wonder why didn’t I think of this…

Mixed Tapes: Lissy Trullie

lissy trullie

New Wave meets Mod would define Lissy Trullie’s style. Her voice and pace are reminiscent of Nico of The Velvet Underground, but her sound is just as soft as her motorcycle jacket. Lissy’s cover of Hot Chip’s “Ready for the floor”  is even more catchy and maybe even better than the original. Her duo with Adam Green in “Just a friend”  earned my affection.

MORPHINE GENERATION

Created in a dingy garage in the summer of 2003, Erik Hart’s Morphine Generation line is very much like what you would find in Daisy Lowe’s closet. Morphine Generation is said to look, feel and fit better than the last thing you bought. This line undeniable coolness is a “Poser” magnet. “Posers” beware fashion in excess may cause ridiculousness and this line for sure needs to be used in moderation.

Passion Pit’s “Sleepy head” awakes you in the same way 3 cans of energy drink would. Their music evokes nostalgic moments, such as crazy karaoke nights when you overdid the alcohol or that time when your friends did a set of prince covers on your little cousins’s toy piano .Whether you feel like you heard it all, this might just change your mind.

PRETTY YOUNG THING

P.Y.T   is a unique jewelry line for witty people with a sense of humor. Designer Arlene Guerra Started designing accessories for her shoots when working as a stylist. Ever changing collections season after season keeps the brand originality, but her unique reinvention of vintage pieces is a constant. Arlene’s look can be described as “cartoon-chic”. I can’t help but imagine it to be what Marie Antoinette would wear to a concert at the bowery if she was still alive.
